Poker Stars Comes Under Legal Fire Too

Last Updated on

Full Tilt Poker isn’t the only online poker site facing trouble post-Black Friday 2011. PokerStars is also coming under fire, and from more sides than one.

Unlike Full Tilt Poker, Poker Stars has at least paid back its U.S. players the funds sitting in their seized accounts after the D.O.J. closed down U.S. operations. But that hasn’t gotten them completely out of the woods with all of its member base (or former member base, as the case may be.)

Now the plaintiff is the software maker Cardroom International who has filed a claim against both Full Tilt Poker and Poker Stars for, as best this writer can interpret the claim, failing to agree with written agreements regarding purchase of software for use on play money sites linked with TV networks like ESPN, Fox and NBC by interfering with the network’s ability to promote that software. How? By buying up the airtime itself to promote its own software. What’s more, the complaint alleges, Poker Stars used money that was obtained illegally from U.S. players to pay for this airtime.

Complex, no doubt. But the end result is time and money in legal wranglings and the public relations nightmare that follows such a spectacle.

Meanwhile, in other sinister Poker Stars news, two Team PokerStars members, Leonardo Fernandez and Veronica Dabul, have been named in a lawsuit filed by Wynn Las Vegas for allegedly cheating at craps to the tune of some $700K. Talk about a public relations nightmare. Veronica Dabul has since been removed from the Team PokerStars roster, although Leonardo Fernandez is still a member.

Official Announcement On Doyles Room Buyout

Last Updated on

Yesterday we informed you that DoylesRoom had been acquired by America’s Card Room and today the official announcement came out. Here it is:

Las Vegas, Nevada – October 10, 2011 – Representatives from the online poker room Americas CardRoom (ACR) announced today their acquisition of DoylesRoom. Americas Cardroom, launched in 2001, was one of the original online poker card rooms. The site has recently re-entered the online poker world and is acquiring skins to fast-track itself to be a dominant player in the market.

“We’re very excited with the acquisition of DoylesRoom and the resulting expansion of the Americas CardRoom brand,” said an Americas CardRoom representative. “DoylesRoom’s new software that’s proving to be a player favorite coupled with their recent success in serving US players made the company attractive for a takeover.”

Current affiliate contracts and existing promotions, including October’s $50,000 Rake Race, will be honored and day to day operations will remain the same. With the acquisition, Americas CardRoom acquired the rights to the player and affiliate database, the DoylesRoom software and staff, and player liability.

“Players and affiliates can rest assured that their balances are safe and secure and Americas CardRoom will honor all of the existing DoylesRoom agreements.” continued the ACR representative. “With more liquidity being injected into the operation of the business, players can expect to see bigger guarantees, better promotions, and greater incentives for being a part of the Americas CardRoom community.”

Starting November 1st Americas CardRoom will have a $65,000 Rake Race and a brand new online poker series called the “Americas CardRoom Online Super Series” (ACROSS). They are also getting prepared to launch an innovative loyalty program to reward their players.

Americas Card Room Acquires Doyles Room

Last Updated on

In a surprising change in the online poker world, recently re-launched America’s Card Room has acquired the struggling Doyles Room.

Just a few weeks ago, America’s Card Room, a premiere online poker site in the early 2000’s, found its way back into the online poker world on the Yahatay Network. Since its reopening, it stands as one of the few places that US players are able to play, and has been very aggressive in its promotion and advertising, including featuring .eu commercials on ESPN and GSN, freerolls to the Punta Cana Poker Classic, and a $65,000 monthly rake race.

Now, with the addition on the Doyle’s Room, America’s Card Room stands as one of the premiere venues still available to US players. After Doyle Brunson left Doyles Room, the possibility of Doyles Room moving has been one much anticipated. However, with this move, players remain on the same network, keep their usernames and login information, and are able to retain their current deals. For the most part, players will see very little change.

So far, the Yahatay Network has remained one of the safe and secure networks for US based players to play. With the resurgence of this once-renowned poker room, and its very aggressive marketing campaign, expect to see America’s Card Room become a household name in the poker world.

DoylesRoom and America’s Cardroom will issue a full press release sometime tonight.

Full Tilt Poker Going French?

Last Updated on

Full Tilt Poker may not be wiped off the face of the online poker map after all. A French business tycoon by the name of Bernard Tapie appears to be buying the beleaguered site, despite its financial and legal troubles.

Full Tilt Poker is the defendant in at least two class action lawsuits, one from U.S. complainants and one from Canadian complainants. It allegedly owes dislodged U.S. players funds to the tune of $390 million, only $60 million of which it actually possesses, according to statements in New York by federal prescutors. The site’s owners face criminal charges of money laundering and allegations by prosecutor Preet Bharara of being a Ponzi scheme. Most recently Full Tilt Poker had its gambling license revoked by the Alderney Gaming Commission in the British Isles. Yet Tapie is willing to take all this on.

Besides being a big business tycoon, Bernard Tapie is also a French actor, Addidas sportswear tycoon and former government minister. Laurent Tapie, managing director of Groupe Bernard Tapie, announced that the group has already signed an exclusive sale agreement with the Full Tilt Poker board of directors. The purchase includes both the company as well as all of its assets.

For its part, Full Tilt Poker announced that part of the sale agreement included plans to reimburse those U.S. players their seized funds. Full Tilt pointed out how Tapie bought Adidas in 1990 and then turned them around to profitability. Tapie plans to do the same thing with Full Tilt Poker.

Poker Stars Starts Canada Cup I Qualifiers

Last Updated on

Poker players in the United States may have been locked out of Poker Stars but not all of North America has suffered such a fate. Players in Canada are now being invited to try and win a free seat in Poker Stars’ first ever Canada Cup, featuring a main event with a guaranteed prize pool of $250,000.

The PokerStars Canada Cup I will take place at next year’s PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) in the Bahamas, on January 9, 2012. Qualifiers for this event started on PokerStars on September 26, 2011.

Qualifier winners will meet up on Sunday, October 23 at 5:30 pm ET for the PokerStars.net Canada Cup Final. This event will play out until the player pool dwindles to a final table of 9 players. These 9 players will then finish out the competition live in person at the 2012 PCA. Poker Stars will cover all travel and luxury accommodation expenses for the 9 final table players with extra expense cash to boot.

The final table will be recorded for televised broadcast during which the $250,000 prize pool will be distributed and the PokerStars.net Canada Cup trophy will be awarded to the winner. In addition to the lions share of that quarter-million dollar prize pool, the winner of the Canada Cup I will receive free entry into an additional tournament, a PCA High Rollers event with a $25,000 direct buy-in.

This promotion is only open to players from Canada. Visit Poker Stars to see what other regional-based tournament and promotions they currently have running.

Full Tilt Poker to Offer Players Equity Stake?

Last Updated on

After the Groupe Bernard Tapie signed an exclusive agreement to make a final purchase of Full Tilt Poker and all of its assets, it seems that the group has decided to make a few big potential moves down the road.  While one of their biggest situations that they will have to face is paying back their players; the French investment group is debating offering an equity stake to players on the site.

This equity stake would not be offered to everyone, but it would mainly be offered to players who are owed the most money out of the incredible $300 million that is owed world wide.  While around half of that money is owed to players in the United States; the group would offer the high stakes players a chance to have a stake in the company, rather than paying them back their money directly.

While this is an interesting situation, it may be one that might not even see the light of day.  The reason for this is that the purchase of Full Tilt Poker won’t move forward at all unless everything is settled with the United States Department of Justice before hand.  The Tapie Groupe themselves have stated that they will not be finalizing the purchase unless  the situation with the DOJ is handled.

Another interesting situation that is ongoing with the group, is that they are also hoping to get financial support from both the Department of Justice, as well as other investors.  This means that they plan to have others (specifically the DOJ with the money that they are holding), pay back a percentage of the $300 million that is owed to players around the world.

It seems that there are still many things that need to be sorted out before the purchase is finalized.  One other thing that is fairly recent to the Full Tilt Poker news, is the fact that the Alderney Gambling Control Commission has actually revoked Full Tilt Poker’s gaming license around a week ago.  This means that the AGCC can no longer do anything for players about the money that is owed to them, and that they have to go directly through Full Tilt or the police.

888 Poker Announces Aussie Millions 2012 Satellites

The 888 Poker Aussie Millions Qualifier takes place on January 7, 2012 at 09:00 GMT (or 8:00 pm EDT) and has a $500 + $25 direct buy-in. At this event, a minimum of two seats in the 2012 Aussie Millions Poker Championship will be awarded, each worth AUD $10,600. Registration for this event is now open and can be found under the “Live Events” and “All” tabs in your 888 Poker tournamnet lobby.

Players can avoid paying the $525 direct buy-in into the Aussie Milions Qualifier, however, by winning their way into the event via cheaper satellite tournaments. Buy-ins for these satellites start at just $1.10.

The 2012 Aussie Millions will take place January 22 – 28, 2012 at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia.

As always with any 888 Poker qualifier tournament, all the usual site terms and conditions and privacy policy apply. The prize for this event is a seat in the Aussie Millions 2012 main event only. Qualifier winners themselves are responsible for getting themselves to Australia for the event and for arranging and paying for their stay while there for the tournament. Players also agree to act as “ambassadors” for 888 Poker throughout their time there, wearing branded 888Poker clothing whenever playing at the main event tournament tables.
