Iowa Online Poker Bill Revived

Last Updated on

iowa

After failing to bring the issue of online poker to a successful vote last year, the Iowa state Senate is looking at a new online poker bill as of this past Wednesday, January 23, 2013.

The newest attempt at online poker legislation is Senate Study Bill 1068 and it could lead to those companies already holding other gambling licenses within the state to add online poker to their real money offerings.

A study bill in Iowa is used to test the waters for an issue with proposed legislation under discussion. If the study bill is successful then it opens the way for an official proposal on the issue to make its way through the state legislature.

Sponsors of SSB 1068 are Senator Randy Feenstra, Senator Wally Horn, and Senator Jeff Danielson. The current bill looks alot like the bill that passed the Senate’s vote last year, Senate File 2275 in 2012, but made it no farther than the State’s House of Representatives, currently under Republican control. SSB 1068 will be considered first by the State Government Committee and requires approval of the committee before it can move onto to a vote by the entire State Senate.

The bill would allow for the possibility of intrastate online poker offered by licensees within the state as well as those licensed in other jurisdictions where it is legally authorized, although subject to the Iowa commission’s own added or adjusted requirements. That means “regardless of location” online poker could be offered to Iowa state residents to the extent permitted by law.

The parent company of Poker Stars, the world’s biggest poker site, has announced plans to purchase a brick and mortar casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Isle of Man based Rational Group US Holdings, the owners of both Poker Stars and, as of recently, Full Tilt Poker, is requesting that New Jersey casino regulators give it the go ahead to purchase the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel for an amount of money that has not as of yet been disclosed. If this deal is approved, it would be the first time an online gambling purveyor has taken ownership of a land-based casino in Atlantic City. The purchase agreement between Poker Stars owners and Resorts International Holding, an affiliate of L.A. based Colony Capital LLC, a hedge fund that currently owns the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel reached an agreement on December 21st, 2012.

This news was first reported by The Press of Atlantic City, based on release of a statement that included such stats as the formation through this endeavor of 2,000 new jobs. The statement also noted that during the transition the casino will continue operating under its present management.

The Atlantic Club is ranked 10th of Atlantic City’s 12 casinos according to their comparative revenue from gambling. This comes at a time when lawmakers in the state have recently authorized Internet gambling, although Republican Governor Chris Christie has yet to act on it.

Poker Stars is cited as the largest poker site in the world, with 50 million members registered and since its inception in December 2001 has dealt more than 85 billion hands.

America’s Cardroom Hosts $5K Micro Race

Last Updated on

5kAmerica’s Cardroom is holding a $5K Micro Race taking place between January 13 and 27. As suggested by the name, this is a race for players at the Micro stakes tables, those being: $0.01/$0.02. $0.02/$0.05 and $0.05/$0.10.

Players earn points for each raked pot to which they contribute. At the close of the two week race period, America’s Cardroom will divide the $5,000 prize pool up among the top finishing players.

Players can earn points even faster by playing in Americas Cardroom’s online satellite tournaments for the Online Super Series II (OSS II). Earn 25 points for buying in to the OSS II $150K GTD Super Satellite: 1 seat GTD, taking place hourly at 5 minutes past the hour from January 13 to 20, or the OSS II $200K GTD Super Satellite: 1 seat GTD taking place hourly at 5 minutes past the hour from January 20 to 27. In both the cases, the satellite buy-ins are $0.50 + $0.05. Again you’ll get 25 points every time you buy-in to one of these satellites.

Otherwise, points are awarded at a rate of the rake or fee multiplied by 1.25. So for every $1 you pay in rake or fee, you get $1.25 points in the $5k Micro Race. Top prize is $500, the runner-up gets $250, and third place earns $220. The prizes go down from there through 100th to 150th place finishers who win $10 each time.

Winning players will receive their winnings in their America’s Cardroom account within 5 days after the end of the $5K Micro Race.
